The Mistletoe Foundation has rebranded as the Momental Foundation.

Our fellowship initiative continues to be known as the Mistletoe Research Fellowship.

About Momental Foundation :

Originally founded in 2017 as the "Mistletoe Foundation," the Momental Foundation is a grantmaking foundation and impact-focused accelerator. Our mission is to build bridges between the academic, entrepreneurial, and civil communities to create a more human-centered and sustainable future through technology. We do this by developing programs and research partnerships that promote social enterprise and help researchers and startups advance the state of science and technology for the public good. We are proud to be building a global community that brings together social entrepreneurs, academics, venture investors, and changemakers that include nonprofits, representatives of government agencies, multilateral institutions, and civil society.

While the Momental Foundation provides significant and unique resources to participating startups, it does not make direct venture investments, working instead through its network of trusted partner funds. The foundation is a California nonprofit public-benefit corporation. It is an independent spinoff of Mistletoe, Inc and a proud member organization of the global Mistletoe “Collective Impact Community.”

The Mistletoe Research Fellowship :

First piloted in 2018,  our flagship Mistletoe Research Fellowship (MRF) initiative is what we lovingly call our "radical experiment."  In a first-of-its-kind agreement with six initial R1 university partners, the Momental Foundation launched a unique program for STEM PhDs and hardware startups with social impact. We combined a research grant for the PhDs with a nine-month remote accelerator program that brings together academics and startup founders as co-learners engaging in professional development and R&D collaboration  in our online community.  In our 2018 pilot, our MRF Startup Collaboration Program engaged 36 Mistletoe Research Fellows in small interdisciplinary teams to collaborate with  eight incredible frontier hardware startups with humanitarian and social impact potential. In parallel, we gave $360,000 to our Research Fellows via the Unfettered Research Grant to encourage growth, exploration, and risk - and even serendipity and play - in their scientific research.

Today we are proud to partner with eleven top universities - ten in the United States and one in Singapore.  Each year we pre-screen over one thousand startups before issuing up to 50 limited invitations to apply to our accelerator program, with up to 20 startups being chosen as finalists for video interviews prior to cohort selection.

In 2020,  due to COVID-19, the Momental Foundation will run a smaller program, accepting 12 Mistletoe Research Fellows and three MRF Startups to participate.

About Mistletoe, Inc:

Before spinning off to begin its own adventure, the Momental Foundation began as an idea hatched inside the Mistletoe Collective Impact Community headed by Japanese serial entrepreneur, visionary, and philanthropist, Taizo Son.  Also known as Mistletoe, Inc, the Community is a global social venture organization with the lofty ambition of addressing the problems humanity faces in the near and long-term future.  Mistletoe, Inc’s primary activities are co-founding and investing in  startups  and communities and supporting the commercialization of new innovations. Since its founding in 2013, Mistletoe, Inc has invested over USD $150M in more than 100 startups and 20 venture funds and donated USD $15M to non-profits and foundations. Mistletoe, Inc is a sponsor of Momental Foundation.

Our Values: The Five Principles
Orchestrate Innovation

An orchestra is an ensemble of performers co-creating a musical outcome that is more than the sum of its parts.  We  combine elements and resources that spark new ideas, companies and technologies. We challenge convention and disrupt norms around the meaning of partnerships, social impact, and technology ventures.

Social Change through Entrepreneurship

We believe the best way to engender change is to support social entrepreneurs with innovative ideas and technologies. Mistletoe Foundation and Mistletoe, Inc are dedicated to helping entrepreneurs access the resources, capital, expertise and mentorship they need to change the world for the better.

Innovation By Community

Creating a large scale impact on society requires large scale collaboration. Unrestricted by geography, our communities of practice provide support for a diverse network of professionals and thought-leaders with deep knowledge and experience who can launch projects with demonstrable solutions and share ideas.

Human-Centered Design

The 20th Century was driven by capitalism and defined by growth through competition. We aim for a 21st Century characterized by community and institutional structures centered around people. We build technological solutions that stem from empathy and understanding of the individuals and communities for whom they are designed.

Sustainable Solutions

We believe solutions to humanity's problems are those that respect the environment and support sustainable living. Due to the rise of industrial activities across the globe, our environment has suffered degradation and our current situation is not stable. Mistletoe works with entrepreneurs, non-profits, and frontier innovations that will galvanize a 'greener' future.

Building bridges between the academic, entrepreneurial, and civil communities to create a more human-centered and sustainable future through technology.
